At the heart of the Pyrenees in the province of Lleida lies the epitome of a high mountain landscape. The magnificent scenery and the rich and varied flora and fauna make this a truly unique location. The park is carpeted with century-old forests of black pine and fir trees and is irrigated by two hundred high mountain lakes, where the izard, the capercaillie, the marmot and the famous bearded vulture take refuge. The best hikes for discovering the park are the Camí dels Enamorats (the lovers` path), the Roca de la Cremada (the burning rock), Llong lake (the long lake), the perimeter of Sant Maurici lake passing through the viewing point and Amitges. Testimony to glacial action in the national park is found in the u-shaped valleys and natural lakes. The landscape is dotted with alpine meadows and scree, while the lower slopes are covered in fir and pine forests. Some of the park`s majestic peaks rise to almost 3,000 metres.
